Here is a card I made using a technique that I learnt in a cardmaking class I attended some time last year.
You stamp the image onto pearlescent card and using a paintbrush and water you swipe over the image, carefully and within the lines to shade it in. You then just dab your paintbrush onto the ink pad and paint parts of the image for contrasts of the same shade. I really enjoyed doing this and think it looks really effective.
My fella thought this was an Autumn card because of the colours, but it's actually a Christmas card lol.
